Food Waste Recycling Requirements for Businesses and Commercial Properties

As of Jan. 1, 2022, commercial businesses that do not already subscribe to food waste service with Atlas Disposal or Republic Services are required to subscribe to organics recycling services provided by the City of Folsom Waste and Recycling Division.

Businesses must offer a three-container collection system to separate organic waste, traditional recyclables, and items to be landfilled. This includes a green bin for food scraps and food-soiled papers, a blue bin for recycling (cans, bottles, paper, cardboard), and a gray bin for trash. Folsom businesses should begin providing three-bin systems wherever food waste is generated by employees or customers.

A Food Waste Audit is required for all businesses before applying for an exemption. The audit results must verify that the business is producing less than 20 gallons of organic waste per week. Please complete all of the required fields on the Commercial Exemption Request form. Incomplete forms will not be processed and forms with insufficient information may result in rejection of your request.

Starting in March 2022, apartment communities that are five units or more will begin the organics recycling program in the City of Folsom as set forth in Senate Bill 1383.  Organic waste material includes food waste, food-soiled paper (napkins, coffee filters), yard waste, and  wood. Property owners will be notified of exact start date of weekly green bin service through mail, email, and the Folsom Waste Collection App.  Green bins will be picked up weekly.

Landscapers
Properties serviced by landscapers are required to recycle yard waste either in a green bin or at an approved recycling site. Please email recycle@folsom.ca.us or call 916-461-6730 with your landscaper information. If you have a landscaper removing green waste, you are likely in compliance with the yard waste portion of your organics. If you service your own landscaping, add yard waste into the Green Bin (unbagged).

Exemptions
Generally, apartments will not be granted a waiver for any reason. Please contact us if you have any concerns about Green Bin placement on your property.
