VEGETATION FIRE

Post Date:08/01/2023 7:14 a.m.

Fire engines were dispatched to a grass fire near Highway 50 and Prairie City Road.  The first arriving units found a two acre wildland fire that had already extended from Highway 50 to Iron Point Road.  Additional engines were dispatched along with a firefighting helicopter.  The fire burned through dense areas of grass, brush, and trees. Warm weather and uneven terrain hampered firefighting efforts.  The fire was contained in 1.5 hours and burned approximately 5.4 acres. Crews remained on scene for six hours for extensive mop up of the burning vegetation in the fire perimeter.  One firefighter was injured and transported to a local hospital. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
