The Public Safety Citizen’s Academy is an educational program designed to create a greater understanding and trust between public safety agencies and Folsom residents. The Public Safety Citizen's Academy is also a required training program for the CAPS (Citizens Assisting Public Safety) Volunteer Program.

The next Public Safety Citizen's Academy will begin March 13, 2024 and will continue each Wednesday evening from 6 to 9 p.m. Graduation from the 2024 Public Safety Citizen's Academy will take place Wednesday May 1. 

To successfully complete the Public Safety Citizen's Academy and be considered for the CAPS volunteer program, participants must attend and participate in all sessions. 

A variety of topics are included in the Public Safety Citizen’s Academy curriculum:

  • Emergency Services
  • Use of Force
  • CSI
  • Identity Theft
  • Communications (Dispatch)
  • SWAT, Narcotics
  • Domestic Violence
  • K-9 and Mounted Patrol Demonstrations

The Public Safety Citizen's Academy will be held in person for 2024 and is open to interested residents age 21 or over. Qualified applicants will have no felony arrests, no outstanding warrants, and have no misdemeanor convictions involving moral turpitude or violence. All applicants will undergo an initial background check prior to being accepted into the Public Safety Citizen's Academy.

Please note that the application must be printed out and page two of the application (waiver) must signed in the presence of a Folsom Police Department employee. Applications will not be accepted via email, fax, or US Mail. 

2024 Public Safety Citizen's Academy applications are due by 4 p.m. Thursday, January 25, 2024. You will be notified via mail if your application to the 2024 Public Safety Citizen's Academy has been accepted.
