Preserving Your Native Oaks During a Relandscape

Post Date:05/29/2024 8:05 a.m.

Do you have an established oak tree in your yard but want to relandscape? Mature oak trees provide valuable shade, help lower summer temperatures, and can increase your property's value by up to 10%. Here are ways to protect your tree in the relandscaping process:

Protecting the Root Zone:

Mature oaks are sensitive to digging around their roots, which often extend far beyond the canopy. Heavy foot traffic and using vehicles or equipment within the root zone can compact the soil, depriving roots of oxygen and stressing the tree. Establishing a tree protection zone to limit activity and disturbance within this area can help reduce long-term impacts on your tree.

Selecting Companion Plants:

Choose native plants with similar watering needs to your oak tree. Plants that naturally grow near oaks are good companions and will help conserve water. Grouping plants with similar watering needs can also prevent overwatering your oak tree. Opt for plants that thrive in the shade provided by the oak during spring and summer.
