The City of Folsom Hazardous Materials Division (Hazmat) makes it easy for residents to properly dispose of unwanted hazardous products.

Learn about the ways we can assist you with waste disposal by expanding the sections below. Remember, never place household hazardous waste products in a trash or recycling bin, toilet, sink, or storm drain.

Our innovative Door 2 Door Residential Collection Service recycles most types of household hazardous waste, including motor oil, paint, stains, poisons, medications, and electronics. We offer the service on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.

Household hazardous waste pickup appointments are available for single-family residential customers as well as multi-family residential customers. You can schedule a household hazardous waste pickup by using our online tool or by calling us at 916-461-6730. 

You can also schedule a household hazardous waste pickup using the Folsom Waste Collection App.

Before making your appointment, please confirm that your items are included on the list of acceptable items for our pickup program.

Please place your waste at the bottom of your driveway. Do not place it next to your house, on the sidewalk, parkway, or street.

Limited drop-off appointments are available.  Please call 916-461-6730 to schedule an appointment.  Materials will not be accepted without an appointment.

Please limit the quantities for each pickup to a combined total of five gallons of antifreeze, five gallons of used motor oil, and 10 one-gallon cans, and two five-gallon pails of paint or paint related material. 

In addition to these quantities, other types of HHW should not exceed a total of five gallons or 50 pounds, plus 125 pounds of Universal Waste.

Folsom Lake Marina at Brown's Ravine has almost 850 wet and dry slips for all types of watercraft. On any given day, hundreds of boats could be on Folsom Lake.

• Control Your Bilge Oil: Many boats are powered by inboard engines and have the potential to leak oil and fuel into their hold or bilge. The boats take on water, and it mixes with the oil and fuel in the bilge. This mixture can easily be discharged by the bilge pump into the lake.
• Free Bilge Oil Cleanup Kits: The Hazmat Division sponsors a program in conjunction with El Dorado County that assists boaters in reducing their motor oil discharges into Folsom Lake. Bilge Oil Cleanup Kits contain an oil absorbent pillow, a pad, a bucket, and a bag for proper disposal. Pick up your free kit at Folsom Lake Marina while supplies last.

Each year, Folsom residents properly recycle thousands of fluorescent lamps! Fluorescent lamps are considered hazardous because they contain mercury. Handle fluorescent lamps with care when storing and preparing them for pickup.

Contact the stores below to recycle the fluorescent and LED lamps. Please note: Christmas light strings are not accepted for recycling.

In California, all types of batteries are considered hazardous waste and cannot go into the trash or recycling bin. Folsom residents can make an appointment for battery pickup through the city’s Door 2 Door household hazardous waste collection program.

You can also drop off batteries at one of the participating retail locations below. Place single-use (non-rechargeable) batteries in the blue drums marked “recycle them here." Place rechargeable batteries in the kiosks and boxes marked “rechargeable batteries only.”

Follow these guidelines to prepare household batteries for pick up or drop off:

• Store batteries in a plastic container. Never use a metal coffee can.
• Tape the positive terminal of all lithium and lead acid batteries (except for button batteries) and any battery over nine volts.
• Place button batteries in a sealed plastic bag.
• Place any leaking batteries in a sealed plastic bag.
• Be aware that improperly packaged lithium batteries can catch fire if they come in contact with each other or any metal.

PaintCare is a paint recycling and disposal service that offers drop-off sites at retailers throughout California. Visit the PaintCare website to see a list of acceptable materials and learn more.

Painting and construction businesses can also use PaintCare services. If you have more than 200 gallons, you can arrange for a pickup.

Residents can safely drop off sharps using Folsom’s Sharps Take Back Program. It's against the law in California to put home-generated sharps in the trash.

Sharps include lancets, hypodermic needles, syringes, and scalpel blades. They are used by people with medical conditions, including insulin-dependent diabetics.

Sharps can be contaminated by hepatitis, HIV, tetanus, and other diseases. Sharps can injure family members and can be a hazard to the workers collecting and sorting waste and recyclables.

How to Safely Dispose of Your Sharps

Free, approved sharps containers are available at the participating take-back pharmacy and fire station locations below. Make sure to place your sharps in an approved container. If your pharmacy is not listed, please call first to see if they accept sharps.

Please call the fire station before you arrive to make sure someone is available to accept your sharps. Fire stations can only accept sharps when staff members are onsite. It is illegal to leave abandoned sharps at fire stations.

The state of California enables the recycling of used motor oil and oil filters by certifying used oil recycling collection centers. Certified Used Oil Collection Centers will take used motor oil from the public and will pay you 40 cents per gallon. Most centers will take up to five gallons at a time. Most accept used oil filters too!
