Aerojet’s Area 40

Area 40 is a 75-acre site northeast of the intersection of White Rock Road and Prairie City Road used by Aerojet Rocketdyne for their operations in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Designated a Superfund Site in 1983 by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the area’s soil and groundwater are contaminated with rocket fuel materials. This contamination is limited to Area 40 on controlled, non-irrigated land that is not accessible to the public. As such, the public is not currently at risk from exposure to chemicals in the soil or groundwater. Plans to clean up the area to remove any public health concerns are in progress by the EPA, the California Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC), and the Regional Water Quality Board.
