Food Rescue Logo in blue and red text with an image of a navy blue wheelbarrow holding bread, broccoli, and an apple The City of Folsom is launching Folsom Food Rescue, a new edible food rescue program to help feed people in need. The new program will help Folsom comply with state law SB 1383, which requires California to recover 20% of edible food that would otherwise be sent to landfills by 2025.

According to CalRecycle, Californians send 11.2 billion pounds of food to landfills each year, some of which was still fresh enough to have been recovered to feed hungry residents. Recovering surplus food will help Californians conserve resources and lower methane emissions, a climate super pollutant, emitted by organic waste in landfills.

Surplus food still safe for people to eat will be distributed to food banks, soup kitchens and other food recovery organizations that serve California’s food insecure residents. The City of Folsom is working cooperatively with other jurisdictions in Sacramento County to establish a regional food recovery program.
