NeighborWoods Program Grows Roots in Folsom

Post Date:04/30/2021 11:32 a.m.
The City of Folsom is teaming up with the Sacramento Tree Foundation to help grow, care for, and expand Folsom’s tree canopy. The new NeighborWoods community-led initiative will improve and beautify neighborhoods and bring neighbors together through community tree plantings and care activities.
To celebrate Earth Day, Arbor Day, and Folsom’s 15-year status as a ‘Tree City USA,’ a community tree care event was held last weekend. Folsom residents helped mulch two of Folsom’s iconic heritage oaks near Folsom Kids Play Park, commonly referred to as “Castle Park.” These heritage oaks are about 70 inches in diameter and estimated to be more than 350 years old!
Mulching helps prepare trees for the summer heat and dry conditions. Adding a layer of natural wood chip mulch protects tree roots, helps the surrounding soil retain moisture, and provides more nutrients to the trees as the mulch decomposes.
Wood Chips Available for Residents
Residents are encouraged to add mulch to their trees at home. The City of Folsom has free wood chips available to residents at two self-serve locations:
  • Behind City Hall at 50 Natoma Street (look for the cell tower behind the rear parking lot).
  • At Fire Station 36 (next to the sandbag location on Oak Avenue Parkway).
