The Water Forum Agreement: Folsom’s Commitment to Stewardship of the Lower American River

Post Date:06/10/2022 7:02 a.m.

This summer, the Sacramento Water Forum is scheduled to undertake two projects to enhance crucial habitat for fall-run Chinook salmon and steelhead trout in the Lower American River at the Nimbus Basin and Lower Sailor Bar.

The Water Forum was established more than 20 years ago to balance the coequal objectives of reliable water supplies and environmental stewardship of the river. The City of Folsom was one of the Agreement’s original signatories, along with a diverse group of water providers, environmentalists, business groups, and local governments. Since then, the Water Forum, with support from members like Folsom and state and federal partners, has invested over $7 million to enhance over 30 acres of fish spawning beds and improve juvenile fish rearing habitat in the river.

This work is crucial to preserving the environmental resources that make our community unique. Previous projects have demonstrated measurable results, including surges in native fish nests in areas where there were very few prior to enhancement.

The projects at Nimbus Basin and Lower Sailor Bar are expected to begin August 1 and finish by mid-October, before anadromous Chinook salmon return in high numbers from the Pacific Ocean to the Lower American River.

The public is invited to learn more during a Virtual Information Session on Monday, June 13, from 6 to 7 p.m. Find more information and registration link at waterforum.org/habitat2022.
