Selecting Native Trees

Post Date:10/03/2023 7:35 a.m.

Fall is the ideal time to plant a tree. Fall planting allows a tree plenty of time to establish a root system before cooler winter months. Enhance your surroundings with native trees that not only adorn your space, but also support our local ecosystem. From providing food and shelter to wildlife and pollinators, to adding charm and shade to your neighborhood, these trees are a win-win for all.

Western Redbud (Cercis occidentalis)

  • Thrives in Sierra foothills with minimal water needs.
  • Admire its pink flowers and heart-shaped leaves.

Valley Oak (Quercus lobata)

  • Iconic twisting branches make it a natural masterpiece.
  • Drought-tolerant and adaptable to various soil types.
  • Towering at up to 70 feet, it's a North American giant.

Blue Oak (Quercus douglasii)

  •  Recognizable by its blue-green leaves.
  •  Found in Folsom's trails and hillsides.
  • Plant away from thirsty landscapes; loves well-drained soil.

  • Sporting silvery bark and stunning white spring flowers.
  • Unique summer deciduous trait; loses leaves early.
  • Thrives with careful watering, remaining green into fall.
